Sustainable Home Ideas

Monday is Earth Day! We've rounded up five ways to make your home a little more sustainable. Leave a comment to add to our list!

Shopping at thrift stores is not only environmentally friendly but also incredibly enjoyable! Many people donate home goods and decor when they move, downsize, or change their style. Check out local thrift stores or online marketplaces for secondhand treasures to give your space a refresh.

Consider investing in energy-efficient appliances. Whether you're moving to a new home or simply looking to upgrade, they can make a significant impact on your energy consumption.

Update/ seal windows. Did you know that up to 50% of energy can be lost through windows of your home? Whether it’s hot or cold air you’ve turned on, actually keeping it inside the home will conserve energy.

Consider smart home strategies. Home tech can assist you in lowering your energy usage. Different thermostats and lighting apps can allow you to ensure energy is only being used when you’re home and actually need them.

Utilize a compost! Whether you start a full compost system in your yard, or choose to use a kitchen bin, composting is a very impactful change you can make to your home’s sustainability. If you live in Courtice (or anywhere in Durham Region, you can read about upcoming changes here: https://www.durham.ca/en/living-here/garbage-recycling-green-bin-and-other-collection.aspx#greenbin)
