Your Fall Homeowner Checklist

Crisp mornings, colourful trees, and that perfect excuse to cozy up at home. But before winter officially rolls in, it’s worth taking a little time to get your place in shape. Whether you live in a detached home, townhouse, or condo, a bit of fall maintenance now will help you avoid surprises later. Here’s your easy, practical fall home maintenance checklist for homeowners across Courtice and surrounding areas.

1. Clear out your gutters

If you’re in a detached or townhome with gutters, make sure they’re free of leaves and debris before temperatures drop. Clogged gutters can lead to leaks or ice buildup. Condo dwellers—check your balcony or terrace drains instead. Keeping them clear prevents pooling and water damage.

2. Check your roof or balcony

A quick visual check can go a long way. Make sure nothing’s cracked, loose, or collecting water.

3. Seal up drafts

Drafts around windows and doors are energy wasters. Use weatherstripping or caulking to seal gaps and keep your space cozy and efficient.

4. Service your heating system

Book your annual furnace tune-up or HVAC service before the first big chill.

5. Shut off outdoor water

If you have an outdoor tap, turn off and drain it to prevent freezing.

6. Tidy your outdoor space (or balcony)

Rake leaves, trim shrubs, and store patio furniture before winter weather arrives. Sweep your balcony or deck, store cushions, and secure furniture before those fall winds pick up off Lake Ontario.

7. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

No matter where you live, this one’s key. Replace batteries and make sure everything’s in working order before you start running your furnace or fireplace more often.

8. Schedule chimney or fireplace maintenance

If you’ve got a wood-burning or gas fireplace, make sure it’s cleaned and inspected before your first cozy night in. (And if your condo has an electric one—lucky you!—just give it a quick dust.)

9. Keep an eye on  leaf collection

For detached homeowners, check the local collection schedule to plan your final leaf pickup before snow arrives. Don’t miss your collection week—no one likes storing wet bags of leaves until spring! Keeping up with a few seasonal tasks now means your home will stay safe, efficient, and comfortable all winter long.
